Here’s something I wrote a while back, based on a true event I observed at the Portland International Airport. I hope you will enjoy it.

The direct translation of the Japanese word jaku is silence. But silence alone cannot capture the essence of this Kanji, which shares the exact literal meaning as the Chinese word Ji. Jaku (or Ji in Chinese) is more like a total lack of sound, a lonesome, dead silence in an open space. The word exudes a minimalistic aura charactered of Zen Buddhism, and it’s no surprise that the album itself is just as titled (except with a heavy touch of modern beats).
This album is no ordinary trip hop, abstract hip hop, or whatever you want to call it. It’s dark, very dark. Like black magic at its best, it completely lures and hypnotizes the listener, and actually gives you no nightmares (more like waking up in a Japanese bamboo forest at 4:30am, in Kurosawa’s Ran). I have included 4 sample tracks from this album and if you want to know what a shakuhachi flute sounds like, want some decent, different kind of Oriental sound, Jaku by DJ Krush should be yours to keep. |
